Once upon a time, my father introduced us to a sweet frosty drink called an Orange Julius. How he happened upon the recipe is hard to say, though he was a bit of a scoundrel so who knows. His original recipe was pretty simple, but as he loved to experiment in the kitchen a second recipe evolved. A lot of recipes I post are re-engineered to be more diabetic friendly. Not these.
I hope you like them.
Simple Orange Julius:
- Orange Juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- ice
Instructions:
In a sauce pan, dissolve sugar into boiling water to create a simple syrup. Let syrup cool fifteen minutes. Pour 1/2 cup of the syrup to blender. Fill your blender with ice. Fill in remaining space with orange juice. Blend. Enjoy.
Note: to avoid messes, maybe don't fill the blender ALL the way to the top.
Evolved Orange Julius:
- 1 Can of frozen orange juice
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup milk
- ice
- water
- 1 egg (EXTREMELY optional)
Obligatory warning: Okay, first things first. I add a raw egg for the protein (and a bit of extra frothiness). I do so fully aware of the risks listed in this article from the US Center for Disease Control. Ensure you read this article or otherwise fully understand the risks you are taking before adding a raw egg to this concoction. Not adding the really doesn't perceivably change the flavor.
Instructions:
Spoon 1/3 of the frozen orange juice concentrate into the blender. Add 1 tsp vanilla, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup of water, and 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. If you understand and accept the risks involved and you're really, really sure you choose to do so (What has the world come to?), add 1 egg. Fill blender with ice. Blend. Add more water as needed to achieve the desired consistency. Enjoy.
